Chapter Nine

It took a little over half an hour for Manfred to drive south down Highway 16 and then left onto the 16A and into the Black Hills National Forest. For most of the journey, the four men traveled in silence, as if they were on the way to a funeral, Lennart thought. Their dark mood suited the scenery and when he spotted the road sign that read “Mount Rushmore National Memorial,” Lennart slumped into his seat and wondered what would become of him by the end of the day. He didn’t like his prospects.

As they approached the village of Keystone, the governor pulled his cell phone from his pocket. Lennart watched him enter a four-digit code: 3629. Then the governor typed in a Google search and studied the results as he tapped page after page. After a few minutes he turned to Lennart and eyed him warily. “So Lennart, that guy in the parking lot, Will Finch. You met him before?”

He shook his head. “Never seen him.”

“No?”

“No.”

“I just Googled him. Turns out he’s a big league news reporter.”

Lennart shrugged and turned his head to study the tourist shops and attractions.

“Based in San Francisco. He’s a decorated vet from Iraq.”

“Iraq, huh?”

The governor scrolled through his phone. “Oh-two through oh-five.”

Lennart winced. “So? What you want me to do about it?”

The governor spit out a puff of dry air. “I want you to tell me if you see him again. Find out what he’s up to.”

Lennart already knew what Finch was up to. He was tracking Amy Bigelow and that could only mean trouble. But instead of telling that to the boss, he decided to let it go. “Sure,” he said. “Count on it.”

Manfred drove through the village along a back street. Then he took a left turn and found his way to a parking lot in front of the Big Thunder Gold Mine.

“Manfred, pull over at the rest stop,” the governor said. “I gotta take a leak.”

“Me too,” said Bosun.

“Make it four,” Manfred added, and pulled onto a gravel shoulder next to a stand of pine trees.

The wind was up and the thin arms on the trees swayed to one side in the breezes. Lennart checked his watch. It was coming up to one-thirty. As he stepped onto the gravel, he took a deep breath. Despite the threat of rain in the wind, the air felt clean in Lennart’s lungs and he was grateful to be free from the claustrophobia he felt sitting in the Caddy.

The governor gazed at the front entrance to the Big Thunder Gold Mine. A family of four was purchasing tickets at the gate. “Manfred, Jack, you picked this place to ditch her? It’s a fuckin’ tourist trap.”

“It’s like you told us. Up in the hills near Keystone.”

“You crazy?”

“Maybe, but this was the only empty parking spot we could find.”

A skeptical grimace settled on the governor’s lips. “So where is she?”

“On the hill. Ten minutes up. You’ll see. There’s nothing else around.”

They walked over to the toilets and stood in a line along the bank of urinals to relieve themselves.
